German Expressionism
SCHNEUER David

David Schneuer’s works are a unique and timeless testimony to Europe between the world wars.

Schneuer was born in Poland in 1905. After graduation from Munich Kunstgewerbeachule, he moved to Paris where he collaborated with many artists and individuals leading to the expressionist movement. This period was to inspire his art throughout his career. Influenced by the darker side of life, his work preserves the expressionist movement of the 1920’s.

He returned to Munich in 1928 where he supported his artistic career working as a stage designer and a poster artist in the theater. The same motifs, which he designed for Bertold Brecht, are to be found in his paintings; sharp eroticism refined in subtle colors and virtuoso drawing accurately depicting his subject’s soul. In 1933 he was arrested and imprisoned in Dachau as a cultural revolutionary. After his release he immigrated to Palestine and settled in Tel Aviv. During this time he created trademarks, posters and large murals in public spaces.

The stylized figures inhabiting the bars and cafes in his paintings were reminiscent of Munich and Paris in the 1920's, preserving German Expressionism at its best, alongside George Grosz, Beckman, and Kirchner.Schneuer's work reminds viewers of Toulouse Lautrec's paintings, not just in their style, but also in their voyeurism. His stylized characters are sensuous and exuberantly humorous. His obvious interest in Parisian Cafe society has resulted in an intimate style allowing the viewer to imagine Schneuer sitting in the corner of a low-lit brassiere with his sketchbook, quietly observing the scene around him. His subjects are curvaceous women flirting with a group of male admirers, or busy street scenes with well heeled couples strolling.

Schneuer continued to develop his expressionist style until his death in 1988. His works are found in museums and private collections throughout the world.
